Part I: Construct Development and Scale Creation

Choose a Construct You Would Like to Measure.

We have decided to choose resiliency as our construct to be measured since resiliency is something that everybody should strive to achieve.

Create an Operational Definition of Your Construct Using at Least Three Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles as References.

According to Shatte, Periman, Smith and Lynch (2017), resilience is “the ability to use positive mental skills to remain psychologically steady and focused when faced with challenges or adversity—contributes substantially to how workers deal with stress and perform at work” (p. 135). Resilience is important since it helps organizations to develop an advantage that rival organizations may not have yet. Resilience is a complex concept that deals with using positive processes to overcome adversity that can otherwise cause a person to not be stable, viable or develop properly (Hornor, 2017). This means that productive processes must be used to help a person to get through crises that occur. In psychology, resilience can be thought of as a trait, process or outcome on a continuum that is looked at as either being present or absent in a person (Southwick, Bonanno, Masten, Panter-Brick, & Yehuda, 2014). Resilience is something that is not tangible.

Select and list five items used to sample the domain.

Select the method of scaling appropriate for the domain.

Justify why you selected the scaling method you did.

Format the items into an instrument with which you would query respondents.

Justify whether this is an interview or self-report instrument.

This interview is a self-report instrument. It is easier to gather data for resiliency through a self-report instrument such as a survey than it is for an interview to be conducted. If an interview was conducted, then the participant may bring up a lot more information than what a basic study would consist of. A self-report instrument would more likely result in more honest answers since the answers would be anonymous. In an interview, people are more likely to hide answers since answers would be connected to a certain person.
