I never recognized the low quality of health care in my country until my dad got sick.Growing up I envisioned having a simple easy life. I had not really given my future that much thought even more i never dreamed of getting a higher education in the US, however my goals changed when I saw the need for health care in my country. In late february 2018 my life completely changed, that was my about his health. After a month of therapy and doctors appointment it was clear that he was in a critical situation, what some would say a matter of life or death. I remember how he constantly lost his comfort zone he would say minutes feel like hours and nights feels like they have been going on for days. He would constantly check his watch, I assumed he wanted to know how long his misery would go on, to be honest I also desperately needed to know how long this emotional and physical misery would last.

I Had seen patients way worse than my dad.In the hospital, his room was on the 8th floor, and the elevator was only used for patients. Going through each floor, I saw many patients that looked much worse than my dad and that terrified me. Everything scared me. All the late night visits in the In the hospital were life lessons that no other place would teach me. It brought out characteristics In me that I never thought I had.

I took care of my dad for almost a year. Not only did I understand the psychology of a sick person, but I also understood how patients react to each and every pill in their body as if it were in my own. One of the things that left a particular stamp on my memory is what my dad told me about what he was going through. He would repeatedly tell me about the pain he was under or where it hurts the most. He would also ask me what he or I should do. After all though, I was just a high school student and had nothing to say. I felt helpless and empty. All I could say was it’ll be okay.

The doctors felt helpless too. At first, they said his kidney had issues. After time went by, they said his kidney was perfectly fine and that it was his liver causing problems. Over time, their . It soon became clear that they had no clue as to what was going on. Many factors such as lack of education and technology contributed to the doctors’ incompetence. They still have no answer as to what caused his death.

After my dad had passed away, I knew I had to pursue a career in medicine. I asked the doctor for my dad’s medical records. After I’m done with medical school and if it’s God’s will, I plan on going through it and doing some extensive research on it so i can find closure and understand the science behind it all. This is why I dream of becoming a doctor and having a and understanding than the doctors we have here in Ethiopia. It is a passion that is exhibited in everything that I do. The famous poet, Rupi kaur, said, “of course I want to be successful, but I don’t crave success for me. I need to be successful to gain enough milk and honey to help those around me to succed” . That resonates deeply with who I am, because this is what I want my life and career to be about. I want my success and experiences to have a positive impact on my country. I do not want people and their families to go through what my family and I had to due lack of resources, education or technology.I have had first hand experience in the numerous failings of Ethiopian health care system. And I want to use that knowledge to prevent it from ever happening again. I have big dreams, and every day I wake up one step closer to achieving my goals.
